Rogue Valley Archers
ROGUE VALLEY ARCHERS
Rogue Valley Archers (RVA) is a non-profit archery club. Its members are
made up of people from all age groups and walks of life. Our motto, “Fun
for the Whole Family”, describes what our club is all about. RVA welcomes
both archers and hunters and all types of bows. We promote getting
young people interested in the sport of archery. We are affiliated with the
Josephine County Sportsman’s Association (JCSA) and hold our shoots at
the Josephine County Sportsman’s Park (JCSP) in Grants Pass, Oregon.
We are also chartered with the Oregon Bow Hunters (OBH).
The club was granted its charter and non-profit status on October 1, 2004.
The original officers were:
Bob Kurilow Director
Dan Syfert President
Johnny Costello Vice President
Greg George Secretary
Gene Miranda Treasurer
Forrest Denison Range Master
Four of these men resigned their office on February 10, 2005. On February
16, 2005 an emergency meeting was held to elect new officers to fill the
vacant positions. During this same election, two new offices were created,
that of Communications Officer and Awards Officer. After this meeting, the
RVA Board was as follows:
Bob Kurilow Director
Bob Kurilow President
Terry Snyder Vice President
Chris Carman Secretary
Robin Cook Treasurer
Forrest Denison Range Master
Pat Hamilton Communications Officer
Awards Officer (Position remained unfilled)
A milestone for the club happened at the same February 16th business
meeting. This was the adoption of our club logo. There were six designs
from which to choose and they were all created by three members of our
club. The winning design is a simple black on white representation of a
family of archers, each holding and representing a different style of bow.
During these first days of new leadership, all of our club members worked
extremely hard at being a cohesive group, sometimes wearing many
different hats at the same time. It was a time of hard work, long hours,
always seeming to play catch up and fill voids. Best of all, it became a
time of real camaraderie upon which great friendships and a sense of
teamwork was born. With the strong leadership and vision of Bob Kurilow
and Forrest Denison, along with the added strength of the new Vice
President, Terry Snyder, our club was on its way.
At JCSP, there are four archery ranges. In this early part of 2005, Range #1
is used by the Traditional Archers Club. Ranges 2, 3 and 4 were available
for RVA to use. These ranges had not, however, been maintained for two
and a half to three years. Much work was needed to make them safe and
useable. Immediately, RVA began to clean up and renovate Range 4, so
that we could hold our first scheduled club shoot. Paths were cleared,
bales were re-banded and bathrooms were painted. Because it was late
January and early February, you can imagine the cold, the rain, and the
mud.
February 20th, 2005 was the date of that first club shoot. It was termed our
“Foul Weather Shoot” and it lived up to its name. The weather didn’t stop
our club members from the thrill of coming out for our first outdoor shoot.
Chris Carman started up the club’s food service at this event. Award
ribbons were presented to the first through third place winners in each
division represented. It was a good learning experience. We learned a lot
about what to do, what not to do and what we’d like to add the next time.
One month later by our March club shoot, ranges 2 and 3 were cleared and
useable. It was at this March club shoot that we started our 2005 Running
Tournament and a Money Dot event. Both the Running Tournament and
the Money Dot event carried on throughout the Spring/Summer season.
March also saw the club’s first newsletter being created and sent out by
the Communication Officer, Pat Hamilton. The newsletter has really grown
to become an interesting and informative part of our club. The famous
“Kiwi Green” club t-shirts were first introduced in March. RVA is often
asked why the loud, green t-shirts. There is a great story behind that one.
Our Range Master, Forrest Denison, has a three year old son named Bryce.
That little guy is a favorite of our club and great archer, too! Bryce’s
accuracy puts a lot of us adults to shame sometimes. One day Forrest and
Bryce were out at the Sportsman’s Park working. Forrest noticed that
Bryce had wandered off and became concerned, as any father would in
that situation. Bryce happened to be wearing his kiwi green t-shirt that
day. Forrest was able to spot Bryce through the trees out on a range. It is
just that safety feature that was the deciding factor in the color of our club’
s official t-shirt.
“No rest for the weary” (some say ‘wicked’) was our heartfelt sentiments
during these days. We had to keep up the pace as our first large,
invitational fun shoot was scheduled for April 10th, 2005. This fun shoot
was dubbed our “Spring Fling” and was a 40 target, 3-D event. In addition
to the work left to be done on the ranges, the 3-D targets had to be
repaired. Due to the awesome effort of our faithful members, we were able
to pull it off. Our Spring Fling was a huge success. We had about 100
registered shooters and many more along as guests. Our visiting shooters
and guests were very pleased with the event and happy that archery is
alive and well in Grants Pass, Oregon.
In May, we got our new bales. This set off another round of rolling up
our sleeves and using elbow grease to:
· Upgrade our target butts with the new bales
· Re-organize the target shack
· Spray for poison oak
· Rake and clear paths
· Remove old target butt materials
· Repair the bridges
In addition, paper targets got pasted and these targets were put out on
Range 4, so that anyone coming to JCSP could use Range 4 and it would
be in a state of readiness. By the end of May, our club had doubled in
size. We also had the task of getting the details worked out and the ranges
ready for the next month’s invitational, fun shoot.
Our second invitational, fun shoot was called our “Summer Jam”. It was
held on Father’s Day, June, 19, 2005. It was a cool day for June and
threatened rain most of the day. There were, however, approximately 90
registered shooters. We generated a lot of excitement when we introduced
our first raffle headed up by Terry and Jerri Snyder. Items raffled were
graciously donated by Wapiti Archery and 1 new target was donated by
Pacific Bales, the providers of our new bales. Some additional items were
provided by the club. It was a great way to celebrate Father’s Day.
The July club shoot was a hot one! No more cool weather. This July event
marked the final scores applying to the Running Tournament. We finally
got a winner on the Money Dot event in July. It was none other than, ‘ole
dead eye, Forrest Dennison. Now we know why little Bryce is such a good
shot! The pot contained $32.00.
The August shoot was our last clubs shoot for the year 2005. It was an
important event as it was also our awards banquet. We honored the
winners from our Running Tournament with a very nice award. We had
seventeen winners.
· Ten 1st place
· Five 2nd-place
· Two 3rd place winners.
It was fun to see the surprised looks on several faces when they received
an award. During this event we held elections for Executive Officers for
the following year.
All of the incumbents were reelected and three new people were elected to
fill the three new offices.
· Historian-Jerri Snyder
· Photographer- Erana Paardenkooper
· Awards Officer- Annette Hardin.
We were treated to a steak BBQ. It was a “thank you” for all of the hard
work by our members this past year. The Steak was prepared for us by our
President Bob Kurilow and his beautiful wife Rhonda. It was delicious.
We learned a lot this year and are planning ahead for year 2006. We have
requested all of the dates for our club shoots and have created and sent a
calendar of events for the entire year of 2006. These have already been
sent to each of our club members.
We are planning a large invitational shoot in June, 2006. This will be a
marked yardage shoot and will be our primary fund raiser for the year. As
an active club we know that we will need to invest in or replace our 3D
targets in the near future. We are taking a pro-active approach and are
willing to stretch our selves to attempt bigger and better events. We feel
that with the quality of our membership, we are capable of trying and
achieving great things in our 2nd year.
2005 ended with a wonderful Christmas Holiday Party/Pot-Luck/Gift
Exchange..
It was held at the home of Terry and Jerri Snyder. On December 04,2005.
