Rogue Valley Archers
HISTORY 2006
ROGUE VALLEY ARCHERS-2006

Year 2006 started with high expectations for what our club would be able
to accomplish. Our President Bob Kurilow was adamant about his
ambitious vision for RVA in our second year.
·        The first goal that he envisioned was for RVA to hold a large
invitational event. Large enough for us to make enough profit to be able to
replace some of our old 3D animal targets.

·        Goal two was to build a “sight-in range” in the open field adjacent to
range four. One that could be seen from Interstate Five.

In 2005, we had accomplished many basic projects required to build an
archery club to be proud of. Getting ranges two, three, and four cleaned
up, replacing old cedar bales with new high compressed straw bales,
repairing bridges on range two, removing old or fallen trees from ranges
two, three & four.  All that remained to be done was to bring range one up
to speed. This was a lofty goal, as range one had not been cleaned or
used for a few years.

Starting in January, in typical RVA fashion, we started getting organized.
Setting up teams to work on bringing range one up to speed, team to meet
and determine what was needed to hold an event of this caliber.

We were fortunate to have veteran archers that were willing to meet with
us as advisors. We thank them for all of their recommendations.
·        We decided to have our “Summer Jam” held in June as our big event.
·        We needed to solicit merchants for donations.
·        We decided to have multiple money dots.
·        We decided to hold multiple drawings.
·        We decided to have good food for our guests.
·        We decided to have events for children.
·        We decided to give certificates for winners for each shooting
category.
·        We decided to use NFAA rules as our guidelines.
·        We decided that club members would not be able to shoot the event.
·        We decided to make online registration available.
·        We decided to let shooters use credit cards to pay registration fees.
·        We decided to have “Summer Jam” shirts available to be purchased.
·        We created flyers, advertised online, and other venues.
·        We created new score cards to accommodate the new categories
and all of our ranges.
Everybody had a job to do. Many had multiple responsibilities. Wives and
children got involved.

In addition to the “Summer Jam”, we also held a second invitational event
in April called “Spring Fling”, and of course regular monthly club shoots.
Even though our “Foul Weather Event” held in February was not an
invitational event we were pleasantly surprised to have several non-
members come and shoot the course. Perhaps the local archers have
decided that the Rogue Valley Archers are here to stay. We have as a club
dedicated ourselves to keeping our events affordable for those archers
with families. We also try to make the event challenging and fun for
members and non-members alike

Our club experienced a big drop in membership at the end of 2005 and
beginning of 2006. We determined that this was due to a couple of factors.
·        Many members joined for the extremely low cost of $10.00 per year.
When as a club it was discovered that we needed to raise our club
membership to $40.00 per family. This was needed to offset expenses.
·        Several of the original members were personal friends of the charter
officers who resigned early in February 2005.
·        A few members had personal physical/medical causes that kept
them from participating.

As an average, we maintain 40 to 45 families in our membership.  Some
members are more active than others.

In 2006, we implemented the “Bow-Bucks”. This is a business size punch-
card that is earned by the members. They are earned by working the work
days and or volunteering their time to benefit the club in some positive
way.
These cards have a $5.00 value. They can be used in place of cash for
Club events, membership dues, and products such as club shirts.  This
has been a very successful policy. It has proven to work as a good reward
to those who do the lion’s share of the hard work.

We completed our first Winter League in Januay. This league was held in
the indoor range. It was held Friday evenings for six weeks. It was well
attended. Awards were presented on February 3,2006.

January, we started to clean up Range One. It took a great deal of work.
Work was also started on the “Sight-In Range” New bales were placed in
the six new targets. Each target was measured and marked. The new style
bow-racks and new hand painted signs were made and installed at each
target on all four ranges. Animal targets were repaired and painted.
February, we held our first invitational. “Foul Weather Shoot”.

March, club shoot.

April, second invitational, “Spring Fling”.

May,  club shoot.

June,  was our big event “Summer Jam”. Also in June, RVA was invited to
help with the Archery In Schools” tournament. It was a great day and we
were able to increase our membership by three families.

September, This month is devoted to the hunters in our club. We
purposely do not schedule business meetings or events during this time,
as most of our members are out in the woods hunting. Some of them are
extremely lucky and bag their game. Other members are also into
competition and do very well.

At the end of the summer season, we as a club, felt pretty exhausted from
the grueling work and stress of holding a large invitational event.  In
retrospect, we feel that even though it was not as successful as we had
hoped for, it was a valuable learning experience. We learned what our
strengths and weakness were. In the future:
·        We would not prohibit our club members from participating.
·        We would lower the registration fees.
·        We would not hold our event on a family holiday.
·        We would keep the extra curricular activities to a minimum.
·        We would not ask JCSA to close the park to all clubs outside of
archery.
·        We discovered that as a club we were prepared for a larger crowd.
·        We worked well as a club.
·        We had fun and we did make money for the purchase of new 3D
animals.

In October, the newly elected president called a meeting of the executive
board
to create a complete calendar for the physical year 2006-2007.
This was done so that we could get the dates of our Invitational events
entered
in the shoot card for 2007.
Also in October we held our first annual HOBO Party. It was great fun. The
food was great.

In December, we had our annual RVA Holiday Party. It was held again in
the beautiful home of Terry and Jerri Snyder. We enjoyed the traditional
gift exchange. This has become a fun tradition with our club.

It was generally felt that 2006 was a great year for our club. We worked
hard, played often and learned some valuable lessons. We look forward to
2007.
