Rogue Valley Archers
ROGUE VALLEY ARCHERS-2007
2007. Our third year as a club began with all members feeling a great
sense of accomplishment. We had all worked hard the previous year and
made great strides, a few errors along the way, but for the most part we
felt satisfied. We were able to complete the two lofty goals we set the year
before.
1. To replace old 3D targets.
2. To build a “sight-in range”.
JANUARY
Starting in January we held our second “Winter League”. It ran for
alternating Friday evenings for a series of six weeks. At the end of March
we enjoyed a Pot-Luck dinner and presented awards to the winners. The

We ended this series with a wonderful Pot-Luck dinner. It was enjoyable
and was decided to continue this event in the future.
We took an audit of the 3D animals that we have in the storage shed. We
counted 81 used animals. We culled out 18 of them and decided to
refurbish and sell these animal targets in a silent auction. It was decided
to place these targets up for auction starting in February at our “Foul
Weather Event”. The silent auction would be concluded in April at our
“Spring Fling Event”.
By the end of January we started to make plans for updating the ranges.
“The Four Amigos” (Denny Hartman, with the help of Willie Dowdy, Garry
Howell, and Julius Samuels) created the design for an easily constructed
frame for the bales at each target butt. These frames were affordable and
easily installed. For the minimal amount of $30.00 per target it improved
the appearance of our ranges too. It was decided that we needed to
replace many of the older bales also.
FEBRUARY
We purchased new rice straw bales for the ranges. Garry and Linda
Howell drove to California and secured the bales and delivered them.
We held our first invitational event “Foul Weather” for the year. We are
always happy to see that so many archers are ready to fight the elements
just to shoot the event. We had 89 registered shooters. The weather was
cool. Rain threatened but held off until about 2:00pm.
We decided to purchase club vests and discovered that they were going
to be costly.
One of our newer members Kurt Davey has a side business of imprinting
and embroidery. He was unable to find the type of vest that most of us
wanted so this project was put on hold.
MARCH
We started to build and install the new target frames with the new rice
straw bales.
As stated before we ended the Winter League with awards and a great Pot-
Luck dinner. We ordered our new 3D animal targets. We got the best price
from Dewclaw Archery in Medford.
APRIL
A couple of our members were able to harvest wild turkey.
We received our new 3D animal targets. We were pleased with them. We
also started canvassing for Sponsors for these targets. We received
sponsorship from
eight merchants: (We appreciate our Sponsors.)
S&J Archery Supplies- Sams’ Valley, OR.
Becky Campbell-Broker- Grants Pass, OR.
Les Schwab Tires- Grants Pass, OR.
OR, CA. Supply Inc- Grants Pass, OR.
OHA of JO.CO.-Grants Pass, OR
Main Building Supply- Rogue River, OR
Dewclaw Archery- Medford, OR.
Alexander’s Framing and Gallery- Rogue River, OR
We held a couple of work days and were able to complete the installation
of the new frames and bales on range #4. We also installed some much
needed back-boards on range #4. We felt that this was a potential safety
issue. We were able to get this work done before the “Spring Fling” event.
We held our second invitational event “Spring Fling” on April 22nd. It
was a good event. We had 122 archers that participated. We also
concluded our silent auction for the refurbished 3D animal targets. This
auction generated a lot of interest and revenue. We raised $700.00 from
the auction, $93.00 from the 50/50 drawing and $42.00 from the Clout
shoot.
It was a successful event.
MAY
We held our first ever Saturday club shoot. We were hoping to
accommodate those of our membership that are unable to attend the
normal club shoot days that are traditionally held on Sundays. The
Saturday event was not well attended for various reasons. Many people
forgot and/ or were working. By holding the event on Saturday, that
required us to set up the 3D targets on Friday afternoon. This presented a
problem. It was too much work for two or three people. Also the
preparation of the food was difficult as our cook was required to take a
day off from work to cook for us. This situation prompted us to consider
two things.
1. Should we hold the second club shoot scheduled on Saturday?
2. Should we leave the 3D animal targets up on the ranges all summer
instead of moving them twice for each event?
JUNE
RVA decided to have fun and held our first annual “Hellgate River” event
on June 16th. It was well attended and all members had a good time. The
food was good and the water was wet as all could attest to. We have great
pictures to prove it.
We held our third invitational event “Summer Jam” on 6/24. This was a
great event.
We had 155 participants. Our largest event to date. With the increased
volume in archers present some new challenges became evident. It was
discovered that we needed to come up with a way to prevent those
archers that failed to pay for the event… Also, we needed to post the
names of Sponsors on the ranges.
JULY
At our July business meeting, we addressed the problem of loss of
revenue due to participants failing to pay for the event. It was decided to
require all shooters to wear a bright green wrist band. Chris Carman
volunteered to research and purchase wristbands. This was done and we
were able to test them at our July Club Shoot. The wristbands were light
weight while being sturdy. It was decided that this
requirement would be introduced at the 2008 Invitational Events. We also
addressed the need to post the names of our sponsors on the ranges. It
was agreed that we would create a large sign to be placed in a prominent
location by the pavilion. Mike created and installed this sign. In addition
we posted sponsors placards at targets on range #4.
The July Club shoot is called our “Traditional Shoot”, meaning all
participants are required to shoot without any sights. Mimicking the
Traditional Style. It is a real challenge for our Compound bow shooters.
Everyone has a good time.
The July club shoot was the second and last Saturday event of the year. It
was decided that events held on Saturdays, proved to have a very low
attendance.
We decided not to hold events on Saturdays, in the near future.
AUGUST
The August club event is traditionally the last of the year. It is a busy
event as we hold the elections of Executive Officers and finish up with a
huge Pot-Luck/ BBQ.
This year in addition we held our second silent auction of used 3D animal
targets.
The silent auction was successful. We sold $462.00 dollars worth of
animals. $415.00 dollars worth was paid for with “Bow-Bucks.” The
remainder of $47.00 was paid with cash. We had a great Pot-Luck dinner /
BBQ. Our President-chief cooked chicken and beef. It was delicious. We
held the annual awards for our club shoots.

In the past years, the newly elected, assume their offices at the October
business meeting. This year we cancelled the September and October
meeting to allow our members that are hunters, to have two months
hiatus for the purpose of hunting.
It was a long break, but all seemed to appreciate it.
SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER: Hunting season. No business conducted.
Except the event calendar was decided upon and the dates for our
Invitational Events were set on the JCSA Event Calendar.
NOVEMBER:
The new Executive officers assumed the responsibility of their new
offices at the November business meeting. Garry Howell, our new
President and Director conducted the meeting. He and the other members
of his cabinet have some new and innovative ideas for our club during the
coming year. It is always exciting to watch what happens to an
organization when new ideas and highly motivated members take over the
responsibilities. With each year our club grows stronger and more
professional.
It was decided and voted upon that the club would purchase a printer for
the purpose of saving money on the printing of newsletters and marketing
materials.
At this time of the year we start thinking about budgets and plans for the
club.
We are also beginning to make plans for our first Invitational Event which
is held in February of each year.
We held our second annual HOBO party. It is always a good time and
everyone is happy to be seeing each other after the many weeks of the
hunting season. The HOBO party has fast become one of the favorite
club activities that are strictly social with no archery involved. It was held
again this year at the home of Mike and Pat Kotrba. Some members came
dressed in costume and we all share our beef stew by mixing them
together in one large pot “hobo style”. It really is very delicious.
Also in November, JCSA held election of officers. This year was a great
year for RVA as one of our members was elected JCSA President. Bob
Kurilow. We are proud to have him on the board of JCSA. We feel well
represented by him. We know that Bob will do an outstanding job for
JCSA. We as a club will support him in any way possible. Bob was the
President of RVA in the first two critical years of our club existence.
Those were arduous years, filled with tough decisions and a lot of
creativity. We made a few errors in judgment, but we learned a lot and
have become a fine strong organization.
DECEMBER:
Sunday 12/09, the club held its third annual Christmas Party. This year it
was held at the home of David and Lynn Bartlett. There were several
members and some new members in attendance. We had wonderful food
and lots of it. We always hold the “White Elephant” ornament exchange.
This activity grows each year and takes on a personality of its own.
As a club we have some goals for 2008.
1. Continue to improve our ranges. We will be participating in the “JCSA
Fire Reduction” project which will happen in the early months of 2008.
2. We are making some additions to our By-Laws.
3. We are planning to have some new and exciting activities at our
Invitational Events
4. We hope to develop a program for the young archers in our area.
5. We will continue to recruit new members by creative advertising.
6. We have expanded our Club Shirts by trying different styles and colors
while remaining true to the original club colors.
In retrospect 2007, was a year of growth. The size of our membership
expanded with the increase of 23 new family members. As usual we did
have 10 members that dropped out for various reasons. This has proven
to be common to most organizations. We worked especially hard to
communicate with our sponsors by awarding them a framed picture of the
targets that they sponsored. We also invested in leather bound pocket
calendars that were marked with all of our events. Those were mailed to
all sponsors with a nice letter of gratitude, signed by our President.
In addition, all participants of our events, that asked to have their names
placed on our mailing list, received a Paper bound pocket calendar too.
We have come to the conclusion that archers love to be reminded of our
events personally.
Year 2007 was a good year. ROGUE VALLEY ARCHERS are here to stay.
